Weekly Guess the Dow

The DJIA closed today at 12,194.13 for a loss on the week of 70 bps.  Because of the shortened Thanksgiving holiday week, we did not do Guess the Dow last week -- hence, no winners.

Where will the Dow close next Friday?  Place your guess in the comments section below before the open this Monday and win two free months of our Newsletter service if you come within +/-5 points.  If no one gets within that range, the closest guess wins one free month.  But this isn't about the free Newsletter subscription.  What we are really trying to find out is if the crowd as a whole is able to come up with a solid prediction.  We're putting the wisdom of crowds theory to the test.  So take a second and help us out.  Have a great weekend!

The DJIA closed today at 12,342.56 -- up every day of the week for a gain of 1.74%.  No one came within +/- 5 points with their guess, but the person who came closest ("hpov2000") gets a free month of the Birinyi Newsletter Service nonetheless; the guess was 12,360.

The DJIA closed today at 12,108.43  No one came within +/- 5 points with their guess, but the person who came closest ("KS") gets a free month of the Birinyi Newsletter Service nonetheless; the guess was 12,145.

The Dow Jones Industrials closed today at 11986.04.  Three of our Guess the Dow participants ("paulo", "Buck", and "KX") guessed within +/- 5 points, which means (by our new and improved rules) that they will each receive two free months of the Birinyi Newsletter Service.  For those who didn't catch the new rules, anyone within +/- 5 points wins two free months of our service, and if no one makes a guess that close then the closest guesser will receive one free month.

Below you can track our historical "consensus" guesses, which was fairly close this week.  We'd like to remind everyone that you can only guess between the time of this posting and Monday's 9:30 open.

Two winners in this week's edition of Guess the Dow; "Alan Crabtree" (12088) and "bladerunna" (12086) each registered guesses within the requisite +/- 5 points of the Dow's actual close of 12090.26 for the prize of a free month of the Birinyi Newsletter Service.

Some new rules to announce for next week which translate into more prizes to go around: from now on, anyone within +/- 5 points of the DJIA's Friday close will win two months of the Newsletter Service, and if no one falls within the range, then the closest guesser will win one month.  This way we'll have a winner every week.

Unfortunately, no winners this week, although several of you were very close.  We had a rare instance where our consensus overshot the actual Dow Industrials close.  Below, you can take a look at how our historical average guesses have stacked up against the Dow's Friday closes since the inception of the Guess the Dow Game.

Weekly Guess the Dow Returns

We're here to kick off another installment of our Guess the Dow game for the weekend.  Where do you think the Dow Jones Industrial Average, which closed today at 11,850.21, will finish next Friday (October 13th)?  Place your guess in the comments section below this post.  You have until Monday's open to guess.  Anyone within +/- 5 points will win a free month of the Birinyi Newsletter Service.

As some of you might have noticed, Guess the Dow was sadly absent last week, so no guesses were able to be registered for today's close.  We apologize for the snafu and are excited to return to our weekly schedule.  We should also point out, in case anyone is wondering, that there were not any winners from the September 29th close.

Weekly Guess the Dow

The bad news is: no winners this week.  We had a few people come very close (within 10 points), but to win players must fall within +/- 5 points.  The good news is: our consensus guess did very well this week, coming in at 11,481.51.  The actual DJIA close today was 11,508.10, which is just 0.23% higher than our contestants' average guess.  As you can see from the chart below, this is officially our most accurate consensus in the short history of this contest (we also had the most number of participants as well).

Looks as if none of our contestants had any idea the Dow would follow last week's gains with another strong week.  The actual close of 11,560.77 was almost 50 points above the highest guess we received.  The guesses for next week should be an interesting indicator as to whether our contestants think the market has broken out or if we're overdue for a correction.  Go ahead now and place your guess in the Comments section below; remember, anything within +/- 5 points wins a free month of the Birinyi Newsletter service.  You have until Monday's open to vote.

The DJIA closed today at 11,392.11, and the good news is that this figure is pretty close to our contestants' average guess: 11,361.24.  The even better news is that we have another winner this week!  "CUMan" registered a guess of 11,390 which proved incredibly prescient.  He'll be receiving a free month of our Birinyi Newsletter service, complete with weekly updates.  Go ahead and start making your guesses for next Friday's close in the Comments section of this post.  Anyone within +/- 5 points wins.
