So Goes The First Week... And The Year?

It's a new year... and along with the ball drop comes the media reports hyping January's performance and how this month effects the remainder of the year. The old adage says, "As goes January, so goes the rest of the year...." Without going much further, we will say that we haven't found any merit in seasonality themes. Pundits last month were certain of a "Santa Claus" rally, yet the market finished down -1.75%. Below, we look at another hypothesis about the first weeks' performance and the remainder of the year. Yet again, we see no correlation with week #1 and the final result of the S&P 500.
